Persephone in Hell is at times delightful, at other times mundane though intentionally so. Yet it is written in an interesting way, almost as a set of essays about a teenager growing up in a rural Massachusetts setting. There is an exuberance about that setting and the experiences there which could become poetic. Glory's experiences center on her family, and because she has mostly abrasive contact with the male sex, she can only see the uglier side of that potential in her own environment. I liked her flights into identification and the ambition to rise as high as she can. It was a candid view of those wishes while they were countered with typical and disturbing family events. Sometimes the transitions were bumpy and sometimes there seemed to be discrepancies in the telling however the book rose in its development towards the finale, tying in the chapter focuses. That was done in a rapturous way when it also revealed her own neuroses and problematic actions stirred by the Sixies decade. I enjoyed many pages of this book.
I enjoyed the book. It leaves you wanting to know more. Some may find some of the issues a little on the dark side. I'd read another by this author if there is any.
So sensitive. So thoughtful... I loved the characters. I truly enjoy a book it when I just can't put it down. Thank you to C.F. Joyce for writing such a moving story.
