"In life there's good people and bad people. Mama wasn't either one, she was just plain unlucky. She used to say, 'Caroline, if I hadn't met your daddy, I could've lived my life a happy woman.' She said it in sort of a joking way, but I think it was probably true. Once in a while Mama would forget missing Daddy and she'd be happy as a kid. It didn't happen all that often, and when it did it didn't last very long. We'd be joking and having a good time, then she'd spot some little thing that reminded her of Daddy and slide right back inside her misery."

Imagine growing up that way. Imagine seeing your Mama live in that misery. It would make you think that there wasn't much in life that could bring happiness. Caroline would be well into her 20's before she'd learn anything at all about being happy. About being loved.

Ida just lost her husband, Big Jim. Theirs was a love like no other. Oh, they had their moments of course but in the end, the loss left a hole the very size of Big Jim in Ida's heart. The hole was right beside another~~the one left when her son, James, walked out of her life. Now left on her own, Ida wants to find James and to do that she needs money. The one thing that she's got of plenty is room in the big house that Big Jim built. All Ida needs is a little bit of furniture to make the house perfect for all the boarders so she finds herself meeting Mr. Peter Pennington, the proprietor of a new store of old things called 'Previously Loved Treasures' and amazingly Mr. Pennington seems to know exactly what Ida needs before she does and he happens to have it all in stock.

It started with one boarder and now she's up to a house chock full of different personalities. There is Harriet who has hair the color of chili peppers; a retired trucker named Louie; a grandma named Laricka; a retired dentist named Doctor Payne (hmmm~~interesting name for a dentist, no?); retired lawyer Wilbur Washington; and last but certainly not least, Max. Max was Big Jim's little brother and not at all someone that Ida was thrilled to have living in her home, but family is family and Max is family.

PREVIOUSLY LOVED TREASURES by Bette Lee Crosby brings to life an eclectic group of characters some of whom you'll love and others, well, they simply aren't lovable. What I love about this author is her subtle way of bringing just a little bit of magic into her stories. Life is full of magical moments and sometimes we blink and miss them. Moments are to be cherished because just like that, they're gone.

What a lovely and tender story about people who might have been cast aside and at a loss for love; but like that old doll that got thrown out and became the most loved doll of all, they find their way to one another to become once again, treasured.

Previously Loved Treasures The Serendipity Series Book Two Volume 2 Bette Lee Crosby 9780989128957 Books Reviews

Bette Lee Crosby has a knack for the unexpected and unusual, which she delivers in the garb of the ordinary and routine. Crosby drew me in immediately with the allure of the loving, forgiving and resourceful Ida. Ida is the reason I kept reading, but one third of the way through the book when Ida is no longer present, her spirit remains central to the development of the story. This speaks to the talent and skill that Bette Lee Crosby brings to her writing. I really enjoyed this book.

When Ida's husband, Big Jim dies, Ida decides to find her prodigal son, James, who left home and never saw fit to communicate with his parents. Ida hires a private detective. In order to pay for his services, she has to go into business for herself, sometimes selling pies, and ultimately taking in borders to fill the emptiness in her home and in her heart.

While in the process of getting her business started, Ida discovers a shop called Previously Loved Treasures. The proprietor is always waiting in front of his establishment when Ida arrives and knows exactly what Ida needs whether it's a bed, a watch, or a desk.

Eventually, the boarding house residents become Ida's surrogate family, except for Max, Big Jim's brother who invites himself to live in Ida's house, hoping one day to inherit her house. Ida never finds James, but she does find her granddaughter, Caroline.

When Ida dies Caroline chooses to continue living at the boarding house. Peter Pennington continues to provide what Caroline needs as he did for Ida. The friction between Max and the other residents and Caroline escalates and becomes dangerous.

I will not spoil the story by giving away the ending. I will say, however, that this was a very satisfying read. There were some grammatical issues and typos. That is why I gave it only 4 stars.
Previously Loved Treasures By Bette Lee Crosby
Synopsis
In a Southern family saga rich with magic and mystery, recently widowed Ida Sweetwater finds the granddaughter she never knew she had and turns a group of haphazard strangers into family.

Struggling to make ends meet, Ida turns her cozy home into a boarding house and goes in search of used furniture. This quest leads to the Previously Loved Treasures shop and Peter Pennington, a delightfully strange proprietor who anticipates people’s needs. In addition to bargains, Peter hands out sage advice. When a pocket watch belonging to one of the residents goes missing for a second time he warns of danger—but will Ida’s granddaughter listen and will she heed his advice?

My Review
What a story! I Love this whole "Memory House" Collection of different tales of different people yet somehow all connected. I often wondered what it would be like to run a boarding house... would we all become family? Would everyone get along? Would they like my cooking or charge me to have to eat it hehehehe. Ms. Crosby weaves a magical tale of found love, romance too late, a disgruntled family member, a love of a grandmother that goes beyond all realms of possibilities and a magical store with a magical owner who always KNOWS just what you need ...all woven together in a tapestry of intrigue, of discovering what family REALLY means and NEVER giving up on your dreams... This is the second book in the Serendipity Book Series , the first being "The Twelfth Child" Even though this book stands alone .. if you read The Twelfth Child you get to experience an "OH MY GOODNESS" moment .. AND I just ordered the 3rd in the series if that tells you how much I loved it!! Supremely Done Ms Crosby!! I give this book 5 gold watches ..
