Bollywood and Romance...it was inevitable, or was it? Romance is probably the most formulaic of genres and that formula does transfer well to Bollywood. But would the melodrama of Bollywood transfer well to the American romance genre?

Strangely, it does....very well!

While I don't think readers of A Bollywood Affair need to be Bollywood experts, it does help to know a bit about what Bollywood actually is, otherwise this book will just seem outright crazy (if you are completely unfamiliar with Bollywood, a good entry point is 2004's Bride & Prejudice, an English-language Bollywood retelling of, well, you know...It is currently streaming on Netflix). The thing is, there is a reason why this book feels like a Bollywood movie--and I heard a rumor that it will soon be one. Bollywood may not be exactly mainstream in romance, but it actually works.

I really appreciated how Dev wrote this--there are a lot of interesting cultural details, but Dev doesn't put them out there like a lesson. Too often in books set in a non-Western (or even just non-American) culture, the author feels that they have to take the time to explain everything. Dev, on the other hand, just puts it out there like it is the most normal thing in the world to the audience. The reader may not catch what something is the first time it is mentioned but, by the end of the book, they know what it is.

I really enjoyed both characters. While they are, like many characters in romance novels, a little "shinier" than reality, I still found myself rooting for both of them, especially Mili. She is a wonderful mix of innocence and sass. Samir is definitely in the rakish vein of romance heroes, but Dev does flesh him out nicely and I found myself liking him more than I thought I would.

As this is romance, predictability, is, well, predictable. However, I still found some nice twists and turns in this story. The plot does go a little dark in the second half, but Dev addresses it in a way that the narrative does not become melodramatic. Personally, I liked this section of the book the best as it is here that Dev really gets into the emotional side of her characters.

There is one way in which this book differs from Bollywood. Bollywood movies are chaste and this book is...not. It's not erotica--the spice level is on par with other mainstream American romances--but I did find it surprising when put against how Bollywood-ish this story is Still, it has some of the more tastefully done sex scenes that I've read in romance in quite some time.

While I read romances, I rarely find one that I feel I can recommend unreservedly. In fact, this is the first one I can think of when that has happened since the retirement of LaVyrle Spencer in the 90s. Dev is a formidable new voice in romance and I can't wait to read more by her!

A Bollywood Affair Sonali Dev Books Reviews

4 Platypires for A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev.

This was just a great romantic read that I was not expecting. Even though I am a fan of romance I was not under the impression that this was a romance book. This is entirely my fault. I was also presently surprised how this romance had so much depth to it. I seriously fell in love with the heartfelt words by Ms. Sonali Dev. sigh
This book is rich in Indian culture which I freaking enjoyed. Its so refreshing to read a book with so much diversity. The clothing, the scenery and the FOOD was a major plus. I actually have a craving to try some Indian food which never happens.
The romance between Samir and Mili was so romantic and frustrating at the same time. Ahhh!!! The build up was just great but I do wish there was more "sexy time." Although I adored Samir & Mili, I did not enjoy much of the secondary characters. I know they were there for comic relief but they got on my nerves. I did not like those scenes with Samir's family, especially his sister in law and Mili's roommate to be enjoyable. I understand it was to add to the Bollywood theme. So it might be cultural as to the reason why I did not like them. Other than those issues I really did enjoy this book and would recommend it to any romance fans.
What a sweet story! (Although some may not like it.)

I actually got a copy because it happened to be on a sale of sorts a few days ago and while this book has been featured in my newsfeed in the past two years a couple of times, I didn't have the will to really grab a copy as it never felt like the right time. But today was the right time for me to meet this book as I thought that Dev's debut was so heartwarming and sweet and, what's best of all, slightly slowburning, and I didn't want it to end!!! I really enjoyed it.

I thought that maybe I wouldn't enjoy it because our heroine Mili was married off when she was four years old (!!!) and I kind of feared that her husband would be an old geezer who you love to hate and that Samir and Mili are going to be in a love triangle of sorts, but really my fears had no foundation whatsoever as Mili and Samir start out as friends (just because Mili got in an accident just when they met and he's kind enough to help the girl out) and it slowly develops from there. Samir's older brother isn't an old geezer and actually seems like a pretty decent guy, but really, no love between him and Mili seeing as how these two meet very, very late in the book.

It doesn't happen often that my heart hurts for the couple and that I get the flutters in my stomach, but Dev managed it with this beautiful writing. It was't just the fact that their background is so different from mine and I simply gobbled up all those facts about India and its customs, it was also the way Dev managed to make you *feel* for the hero and heroine and really want them to be together. Ah, this is why I love to read.

Despite the fact that Mili was a giant crybaby (really, the woman could cry a river in a jiffy), I wasn't actually all that bothered by it in this story as I thought that it added to the character... [Has someone robbed me of my senses? I hate it when heroines do nothing but bawl their eyes out!] It didn't matter that Samir was bit of a hypocritical jerk at one point, I genuinely liked this story and felt that Mili and Samir can get past all these issues and these two actually would work together really well.

*happy sigh* Give it a shot, if you haven't so far. )
